All About Omega 3 Sources For Feed In Australia

The demand for omega-3-enriched nutrition products is on the rise. Nutrition experts recommend that people consume more of these fatty oils for a variety of reasons. The omega-3 fatty acids are being sought by the animal feed industry as a way of enhancing the productivity, health, and welfare of animals. However, there is a growing demand for omega-3-rich feed ingredients. Here are the main ingredients that feed the industry.

Fish meal

Depending on the fish species, the fish meal can contain up to 10% fish oil. This is a very high level of omega-3 fatty acid, particularly DHA (docosahexaenoic acids) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acids).

Canola oil

Canola oils contain up to 10% ALA. Canola oil can be bitter if it isn't treated properly. Full-fat canola seed (extruded), can be preferred in certain cases, especially when adding oil at the farm level.

Soybean oil

Soybean oil, which contains 7% of ALA, is the next richest. Technical reasons dictate that most farm animals are fed 0.42% ALA, with a minimum of 6% oil added to their feed formulas.

Other minor sources

There are other plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids that are convenient, but they are not available to the critter feed sector because they are eaten by humans (chia seeds and hemp seeds, walnuts, or brussels sprouts).
