Ways of Using Your Smart Business Card

You can spend hours designing and printing the perfect business card. It's important to get that step right, but it's all for nothing until you deliver those business cards to the right people in the right way.

Business cards sitting in their box at home or office aren't going to work for you and yet you don't want to have them randomly spread around your neighborhood like confetti. So come up with some strategies to get them to useful contacts.

Always keep business cards with you. Keep some in your wallet and even a special card case – it looks professional and keeps them neat in your pocket.

Keep an extra box of cards in your car's glove box in case you give more than you expect in a day. The idea is that to be able to deliver as much as possible without ever getting run out would be useful. You can find pure gold business cards from Pure Metal Cards.

Remember that the idea is to exchange business cards instead of just giving your own. You are building a two-way network. So when you meet someone you think would be a good contact, ask for their card first and give yours in return.

Treat their card respectfully – read it briefly and keep it carefully in your wallet or card case. If you think you know other people who might be interested in that person's business, ask for additional cards so you can refer them.

Find potential networking partners for your business. Ideally, you want a business that complements your own with the same group of customers but doesn't have direct competition. So if you were a sports nutritionist, for example, good potential partners might be a health food store, a gym, a physiotherapist, etc.

Ask them if they'll keep some of your business cards in exchange for giving them to potential contacts. Give them a stack of cards and perhaps a cardholder so that the cards are readily available in their reception area.

How to Create the Perfect Custom Business Card

Take some time to think about what your business card says about you. After you, this will be the first impression of your company for many people you meet. If it's poorly produced and amateurish, people will assume the same about your business, but it's easy to make your business card work better for you.

Here are The Design Mechanics' top tips for creating the perfect business card:

1. Say what you do!

Let's start with the obvious. So many business cards just don't indicate what a company does. If you have a non-descriptive business name, such as "A & J Associates," make sure your business card actually tells people what you do.

2. Keep an eye on what your card is for

Remember that the main reason for a business card is for people to get your contact details. As such, make sure your phone number, email address, and website are clearly legible. Make sure phone numbers, especially, are in easy-to-read fonts. Many creative typefaces have poor numbers, which means that numbers like 1 and 7 can be mixed up. You can browse Puremetalcards for more information on custom business cards.

3. Do not use a non-business email address

Business email addresses are cheap to set up. Make sure the first thing you do is buy a domain name and hosting facility so that you can trade from a business email address from day one; nothing says you just set up or may not be here tomorrow than to display a Hotmail, Gmail Email Address, BT Internet, etc on your business card.

4. Get new cards if your details change

The last thing you want to do is apologize when you turn in your business card. If your details change, don't scribble it down and write your new number just because you have one box left. Put them in the recycle bin and get some more. Do you want people to think that your business is so bad that you can't afford to buy new cards? If your data is likely to change, buy a couple hundred at a time.
